For non-text question type, such as Emoji or Scale, you can set to allow additional text response. This lets your students provide text response, in addition to their reply option.
In the question creation menu, click the gear icon to bring up the Question options menu:
In this menu, if you want to make additional text response available to your question, make sure the toggle is on (button is purple).
Hint: You can also make text response mandatory by toggling Text response is required
